WAYNESBORO, Pa. - William W. "Tommy" Thompson, 75, of 11707 Terra Cotta Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, at Waynesboro Hospital. Born Aug. 11, 1922, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late William A. and Madeline Warehime Thompson. He was a 1940 graduate of Waynesboro High School; a 1941 graduate of Staunton Military Academy; and a 1947 graduate of Pennsylvania State University, with a bachelor of arts degree in business and finance. During World War II, he served as a rifle company commander in the 84th Infantry Division, including three European campaigns, the Rhineland, Central Europe and the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he joined the Army Reserve and completed the Infantry Career Course at Fort Benning, retiring as lieutenant colonel in 1972. He went into business with his father, and retired as president of Thompson Oil Co., Waynesboro, in 1991. He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, Waynesboro. He was on the board of directors of the following organizations: First National Bank, Waynesboro Savings & Loan, and Waynesboro Welfare Association, all of Waynesboro; Staunton Military Alumni Board; Pennsylvania Petroleum Association; and Penn State University-Mont Alto Campus. He was a member of BPO Elks Lodge 731, Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15; and Acacia Lodge 586 F&AM, all of Waynesboro; Harrisburg Consistory; Zembo Temple; and Retired Officers Association. He also was a member and past president of Rotary Club of Waynesboro. He served two terms as chairman of Waynesboro Community Chest Drive. He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Daugherty Thompson, whom he married Oct. 18, 1946; a son, William W. Thompson Jr. of Great Falls, Va.; one sister, Adrienne Van Loan of Malvern, Pa.; two granddaughters and two grandsons.
